Charles Watkins Merrifield

Merrifield trained as a lawyer but never practised. He became an Examiner at the Education Department in 1863 was elected to the Royal Society. He went to the Royal School of Naval Architecture in 1867.

As an expert on tables and interpolation he served on the committee which was set up to evaluate Babbage's Analytic Machine. He was also active in promoting improvements in the teaching of geometry.
